What software would be best for playing a usb-midi keyboard in real time (or close to real time)?
I have a usb-midi cable for my keyboard and I'd like to be able to both record and use it for live performance, but all the software I've tried this with has a delay of a fraction of a second which makes recording difficult and live performance impossible.
I'm not necessarily looking for free software - I'm willing to pay for something that will work.
Aside from the computer's power, the thing that most people overlook is the soundcard. If you are using a laptop with the onboard sound card, it will not perform like an external sound card (I'm assuming you're using a laptop). If you get an interface that supports ASIO, it will bypass the sluggish on-board processing and the information will exchange in a more direct route.
These can be as inexpensive as 100 dollars and connect through USB (although, if you can swing the price I would go for a firewire interface provided your computer has a firewire port). M-Audio makes some affordable interfaces (when I say interface, I am essentially referring to an external sound card) that utilize ASIO. When you play with an ASIO supported sound card, the delay is non-existent to human ears including your own. The software will usually play no part in latency because those settings (buffer size) are adjusted in the control panel of the interfaces that I have been referring to.
