Plug Connector
What is that round thing on my laptop power supply cord near the connector that plugs into the laptop?
There is a short near the low voltage connector plug so I will need to cut off the old connector and solder on a new one. The job would be much easier if I could just cut the cord *behind* that round, barrel-shaped thing. But is that item a necessary part of the power supply? Does it affect the low voltage A/C like a magnet or a capacitor? Or is it just a spacer to protect the connector itself from damage?
That round thing is a filter, for the switching power supply provide with your laptop manufacture. The filter has two primary functions.
1. To prevent electromagnetic interference, generated by the switching source from reaching the power line and affecting other equipment.
2. The second purpose of the input filter is to prevent high frequency voltage on the power line from passing through the output of the power supply.
It would be risky to remove, unless you have near perfect power everywhere you plan on using this laptop. Which by the way is imposable.
