What a pilot needs his first officer for?In case of death of the pilot can his first officer flight the plane?
Workload has a lot to do with it. I don't think there will be a time where there will be just one person in the flight deck.
The other thing will forget about is the 'non-normal' checklist. If there is an engine fire, the PIC (pilot in command) flies the airplane while the SIC (second in command) gets out the emergency manual and gets the proper procedure for a shutdown. If there is an observer in the flight deck, he may be called to do the radio calls in case of an in-flight emergency. This of course in gone over before the airplane leaves the gate with the flight crew knowing what is expected if an emergency arises.
Of course we all hope that this never happens, we know all too well that problems will present themselves. Whether it is an engine fire or smoke in the cabin, there is a book of procedures for this. During preflight checks, pre-takeoff, after takeoff, before landing checks are usually done with a SIC. Nothing is overlooked for safety sake.
