Drum Microphone
Drum Microphone Help?
im looking to buy good quality drum mics but at a reasonable price for my kit...
any suggestions? if it helps i play really loud and i prefer to play all kinds of metal music..
In addition to the comments regarding the SM57, there are alternatives that sound great for less money. Such as the SHS OM-450. I have one, and I actually prefer it over the SM57. It sounds warm and rich. Slap it on your snare for a pleasant surprise. It typically runs for about 20 or 30 dollars less than the SM57.
There is also a great brand of microphones for ridiculously cheap. They sound really good on my kit, which is your standard run of the mill maple kit. GLS Audio's ES57 is simply unbeatable for the price. You can get 3 of them for the price of one SM57. The quality is impressive as well.

20 Ebony Powerstroke 3 Resonant Bass Drum Head with pre-cut 10 hole. $35.8 The POWERSTROKE concept of adding an underlay ring was pioneered by Remo. The POWERSTROKE 3 head is a single ply ambassador-weight head with an underlay ring at the outer edge of the head to subtly dampen unwanted over-ring. This design creates a near-perfect balance of response and tone control that has quickly made POWERSTROKE 3 one of Remo's most popular drumhead models. The 20" Ebony Powerstroke 3 Bass Drum Head "CH" version is made with a pre-cut 10" hole in the center of the drumhead. This head createssignificantly less "ring" and "boominess" for a tighter and more controlled sound. CrashGuard Drum Mic Isolator $34 The CrashGuard is a unique sound-shielding device that isolates the drum microphone to attenuate the sound of cymbals during the recording process. This has the net effect of reducing interference between the two sources thus enabling greater control over the sound of the drum.Compact and light weight, the CrashGuard is designed to fit most popular drum microphones and mounts directly on the boom stand using the microphone clip to hold it in place. The high impact ABS construction is tough enough to withstand the hit of a drum stick by even the most aggressive drummer. To ensure the microphone performance is maintained, the under-belly is fully coated on the inside with high density open-cell foam to absorb internal reflections and reduce phase cancellation. Plus the innovative design features an extended cable cutout that allows the microphone to be articulated for precise placement, further optimizing the performance.Once in place, the CrashGuard surrounds the microphone with a sonic barrier. By reducing the spill from the cymbals, more of the drum can be captured. This enables the engineer to add EQ to the drum such as increasing high end for more attack without accentuating the sound of the cymbal. On close proximity sources such as the high-hat and snare, the engineer enjoys greater balance over each sound. The CrashGuard is an easy to use instrument shield designed to control the spill of cymbals entering the drum for greater control during the recording process. |

GLM200 Miniature Hypercardioid Condenser Microphone $249 The GLM-200 is a hypercardioid mic with a low impedance balanced XLR-type output, powered by 12 to 48V phantom power. It offers the quality of large studio microphones, yet is nearly invisible in use. The GLM can be attached to an acoustic guitar, sax, flute or the performer's face to allow freedom of movement. It can be attached to drum rims to pick up a drum set without the unsightly clutter of boom stands. These attachments can be made using the included mounting hardware or tape. Used as a lavalier microphone, or hidden on a film set, the GLM disappears in use yet provides excellent sound quality. The hypercardioid GLM-200 is the best choice if you need rejection of background noise, room acoustics, feedback, and sounds behind the microphone. Made of a rugged, resilient space-age material, the GLMs molded housing is designed to resist damage from demanding professional use. Performance benefits of the GLM include a wide, smooth frequency response; excellent transient response; and minimal off-axis coloration. The GLMs housing is designed to improve the high-frequency response of the microphone capsule. In contrast, the frequency response of large microphone capsules often is degraded by the microphone housing (due to sound diffraction). Included with the GLM-200 are a GLM-UM Universal Mount, a GLM-TB Tie Bar, GLM-BC Belt Clip, and a GLM-WS2 Windscreen. Specifications: Type: Miniature condenser. Element: Electret condenser. Frequency Response: 60 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Polar Pattern: Hypercardioid. Impedance: 100 ohms, balanced. Recommended minimum load impedance 1000 ohms. The Acoustic Electric Cymbal is capable of creating a wide range of sounds, from that of a classic Zildjian cymbal to some very non-traditional sounds, explains Zildjian VP John Roderick. "For drummers, it will have an inspirational impact akin to what the acoustic electric guitar has done for guitarists.Unlike electronic drum set trigger pads, Gen16's AE Cymbals sound and respond just like traditional cymbals, but play at less than a quarter of the volume. The AE Cymbal is not a sample trigger device but instead, its an actual cymbal and plays like one, but at a dramatically reduced volume, utilizing a unique dual microphone pickup and a digital signal processing engine to amplify and model the cymbals response and creating a range of natural cymbal sounds without the use of sampling or MIDI. The user can experience an array of Zildjian tones or add effects to each real cymbal."The AE Cymbal represents a true paradigm shift for musicians," says John. "It's an entirely new instrument, |

U87 Ai Set Multi Pattern Condenser Microphone w/Windscreen and Shockmount $3399.95 The Neumann U87 ai is perhaps the most famous, most called upon, most listened to, most recognizable, most imitated (though never quite duplicated) large-diaphragm multi-pattern solid-state condenser microphone in the entire free world.Phew! Now that thats out of the way, lets discuss why.Beneath the sturdy, well-built head-grill is the famous Neumann K67 large diaphragm, dual back-plate capsule. It offers 3 selectable polar patterns (omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8) that are easily switchable from the front of the mic. Around the rear of the mic is a 10 dB attenuation switch. It enables the microphone to handle sound pressure levels up to 127 dB. This means that you can place the U87ai in front of a loud source yet still be able to cleanly capture all the subtleties and nuances without breaking up (i.e.: distortion). Also around the back is a low-frequency cutoff switch, handy when the source is emitting an over abundance of low-end signal. Allow the vocalist to get real up-close and personal to the mic and not overload the low-end due to proximity effect. Brilliant! The Neumann U87 ai shines when employed for lead vocal duties, but is equally comfortable capturing acoustic guitar, woodwinds, string instruments, room sounds, and hand percussion. Throw a pair of u87ais over an acoustic grand piano and elegantly capture the depth and richness of this awesome beast. Space a pair over an acoustic drum-kit and youll delight in the precision reproduced thwack of the toms and sizzle of the cymbals, all without breaking a sweat. The venerable Neumann U87 ai is undoubtedly the barometer for which all other solid-state, large-diaphragm microphones are judged. That, my friends, is by no means an accident. |
