Cardioid Condenser
what is the difference between a Cardioid microphone and a condenser microphone?
Interesting question. To compare a cardioid to a condenser microphone is like comparing grass to the color green. You see, cardioid is what is called a Polar or Pickup Pattern, which describes the directionality of a mic. If a mic is cardioid, that means that it was designed to pick up the sound source in a one, single or unidirection. It doesn't pick up sounds well from the back of the mic, it picks up best from the front. A condenser mic is a type of mic that usually requires phantom power in order to run. The condenser mic is very popular in professional recording and many albums in stores today have had vocals and other instruments recorded on a condenser mic. A condenser mic can have a cardioid polar pattern or it can have an omnidirectional, hypercardioid or figure 8 polar pattern. Just depends on the mic, but cardioid is the most popular pickup pattern! Hope that helps!

C451B Cardioid Condenser Microphone $579 The C 451 B is an excellent tool for accurately capturing signals rich in transients such as drums, instruments with a percussive sound, acoustic guitar, or for overhead applications. Responding to growing demand, AKG decided to make the C 451 B with the same acoustic performance as the popular original C 451 EB + CK 1, with dramatically improved specifications. Using an extremely light diaphragm, the new C 451 B is almost totally insensitive to handling noise. Other features include an all-metal body for excellent protection from RF interference and high reliability for excellent results under almost all conditions. Ultra-smooth response with slight rising on-axis frequency characteristic High front-to-back rejection ratio Transformerless output for low distortion at high operating levels 10 and 20 dB pad Switchable 12-dB roll-off at 75 or 150 Hz The C 451 B is a cardioid only design with a permanently fixed capsule (a departure from the previous modular system). The acoustics of the original cardioid-capsule, CK 1, are modeled and matched in the current version, producing the unique overall rising frequency characteristics. The rise is no more than 3 dB and is broadly centered around 12 kHz. Its transformerless preamp uses surface mount technology and, therefore is lighter, yet more rugged than its predecessor. Switchable 10 and 20 dB pads are now integrated. Maximum sound pressure levels in the range of 155 dB (in the 20 dB sensitivity position) can be attained with no greater than 0.5% distortion. A selectable low frequency, or bass roll-off option, provides 12 dB per octave attenuation below 75 or 150 Hz. The C 451 B, like its predecessor, is most commonly used in studio and tour sound applications such as miking choirs, drums, percussion and acoustic guitars. It operates on all phantom voltages between 9 and 52 volts. The SA 40 stand adapter and W 90 windscreen are included as standard accessories. SPECIFICATIONS |

KMS105 Supercardioid Condenser Microphone $699.95 Designed with superlative vocal reproduction in mind, the KMS105 brings Neumann quality to the demanding sound reinforcement environment. With its super-cardioid polar pattern, low self noise and colorless off-axis pickup, the KMS105 complements in-ear monitor systems. By employing a unique triple acoustic filter, The KMS105 minimizes popping and wind noise, and with special mechanical and electrical filters, handling noise is virtually eliminated. Because of the superior resolution and linear high frequency response, it is very easy for the artist using the KMS105 to identify whether he or she is "on mic". Acoustical features: When compared to other handheld vocal microphones, the KMS105 offers a superior resolution of the voice, with extended frequency response and accurate transient detail. Sibilance problems common to other handheld condenser mics are eliminated. No foam is used in the basket, thus eliminating any "clouding" or "muffling" of the sound. Also, by using a studio grade DC-polarized condenser capsule, all the nuances of the voice come through with subtlety, power and focus. The K55 capsule was developed from the famous K50, found in the KMS150, KM150 and KM185 microphones. This new version features a super-cardioid pattern, achieved by specially modifying the response of the K50 pressure gradient transducer. The frequency response characteristic is developed in the acoustic realm, allowing for accurate representation of transient details found in music and speech, and thus transmitting a very "open" and detailed capture of the human voice.
